Yang Peng's "Spark": A Masterpiece of Minimalistic Residential Design

Exploring the Aesthetic Impact of Coherence in a 1,448 sqm Space

Yang Peng's award-winning residential design, "Spark", is a testament to the power of minimalism and the beauty of natural light. With a dramatic twisting staircase as its centerpiece, this home is a masterclass in creating aesthetic impact through coherence and simplicity.

Yang Peng's inspiration for "Spark" came from an understanding that a space can be transformed by natural light, art, and spatial construction. With a total area of 1,448 square meters, the house has been designed to minimize partitions and decorations, allowing the space to be perceived as a whole. This approach, which is both contemporary and minimalistic, creates a powerful aesthetic impact and a sense of coherence.

What sets "Spark" apart from other designs is its minimalistic approach, featuring white walls and ceilings contrasted with dark timber floors in a herringbone pattern. The four-story house is connected by a dramatic twisting staircase that extends up to an attic. Its whitewashed balustrade curves away from the nook, forming a sculptural ribbon that seems to flutter in the air. Large windows in the living room allow plenty of natural light to pour over the furniture, framing views of the verdant outdoor garden.

The realization of "Spark" involved the removal of partitions to create an open-plan space for entertaining and relaxation. The adjoining kitchen, dining area, and lounge allow the residents to enjoy a contemporary lifestyle. The ceiling's coving is curved, forming a delicate junction between the wall and ceiling and softening the character of the 3.4-meter high volume.

One of the main challenges in creating "Spark" was the processing of the structural curve surface. The curving staircase was made of several white-paint steel panels of different heights, which were cut and forged to connect tightly and form a naturally smooth radian. The living room features a TV backdrop that resembles a page corner rolled up, a bespoke curly shape made from an aluminum plate.

"Spark" was designed by Yang Peng and Zaiyun Yin from 8C Art Space. The project started in September 2018 and was completed in June 2019 in Changsha, China. The design was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
